Three ways to cut a video on the timeline
The fastest is trimming the edges: hover over the start or end of the clip on the timeline and drag it inwards. That removes the countdown at the start, the moment you reach for the stop button or any leftover at either end. Nothing is deleted from the original file: if you go too far, just drag the edge back out.
To remove something from the middle, put the playhead where the unwanted part begins and press S (or Ctrl+B, or the “Split” button); repeat where it ends. You now have three clips: select the middle one and delete it with Delete or the bin icon. The third way is typing an exact length in the “Duration” field in the Inspector, handy when the clip must last, say, exactly 15 seconds.
Precise cuts: frame by frame, snapping and gaps
To cut right before a word or a shot change, zoom into the timeline with + or Ctrl+wheel and move the playhead with the ← and → arrows: each press moves one frame, and with Shift it jumps a full second. The magnet button makes edges and the playhead snap together, so clips sit flush with no sliver of black between them.
When you delete a middle section, an empty gap is left on the track; if you export like that, that stretch comes out black. The “Close gaps” button slides every clip to the left so they play back to back. If you make a mistake, Ctrl+Z undoes and Ctrl+Y redoes (up to 150 steps back).
What you need and what you get
Vaideo Editor runs in the browser on a computer with a screen 900 pixels wide or more; there's no mobile version. You can open it and try it without an account, but to upload your video (up to 2 GB per file) and export it you need a free Vaideo account, no card required.
The result is an MP4 (H.264 with AAC audio) up to 1080p on the free plan, with no watermark on what you upload; with Unlimited, 2K and 4K too. If you also want to add text, music or switch to vertical, it's all in the same editor: see everything it does at /en/cases/free-video-editor/. And if you have no footage, Vaideo's AI creates a video from a topic or an article and opens it in the editor for you to fine-tune.
Ways to use it
Remove the start and end of a recording
Drag both edges of the clip inwards to where the good part starts and ends. It's the most common cut and takes seconds.
Remove mistakes, pauses or filler from the middle
S at the start and end of each slip, Delete to remove it and “Close gaps” at the end. Ideal for talking-head videos.
Pull a short clip for Reels, Shorts or TikTok
Trim the best moment out of a long video, switch the canvas to 9:16 and export. Type the exact duration if the platform has a limit.

Export as MP4

Tips that make the difference
- ★Play with the space bar and stop right where you want to cut; then fine-tune frame by frame with the arrows.
- ★Zoom into the timeline (+ or Ctrl+wheel) before cutting: zoomed out, it's easy to be half a second off.
- ★Keep the magnet on so clips snap to the playhead and to each other, with no invisible gaps.
- ★Always press “Close gaps” before exporting if you deleted sections: a gap exports as black.
- ★If there's audio on another track (separate music), remember to trim it too or split it at the same point.

Frequently asked questions
Can I trim a video online free without a watermark?+
Yes. In Vaideo Editor what you upload exports with no watermark on any plan, free included. You only need a free account to upload the file and export.
Does trimming delete parts of the original file?+
No. Trimming only changes which part is used on the timeline; the file you uploaded stays intact. You can lengthen the clip again by dragging the edge or undo with Ctrl+Z.
How do I remove a section from the middle?+
Press S with the playhead at the start of the section and again at the end, select the piece between the two cuts, delete it with Delete and press “Close gaps” to join the rest.
Does the video lose quality when trimmed?+
On export the video is re-encoded to MP4 (H.264). If you pick the same resolution as the original (up to 1080p free, 2K or 4K with Unlimited) and “High” or “Max” quality, the difference isn't visible to the eye.
Can I trim a video on my phone?+
No. Vaideo Editor is made for computers and needs a screen at least 900 pixels wide. There's no mobile app.
What file size and formats does it accept?+
Up to 2 GB per file, in the usual phone and camera video formats. The result always exports as MP4, which works on YouTube, Instagram, TikTok and WhatsApp.
