How clips are joined on the timeline
In the “Media” tab you can import several files at once. Each time you press the + on a thumbnail (or double-click it), the clip is added to the end of the main video layer, just like in CapCut. If you add them in the order you want them to play, the video is already merged; you can also drag them straight onto the timeline.
To change the order, drag a clip to another spot on the same layer. If moving or deleting clips leaves an empty space, the “Close gaps” button slides every clip to the left so they play back to back. With the magnet on, clips snap to the edge of the previous one when you drop them, so no invisible black frames are left.
Mixing vertical, horizontal and different-quality videos
It's common to join a video shot in portrait with one shot in landscape, or a phone clip with a camera clip. Vaideo Editor fits each clip inside the canvas you choose (16:9, 9:16, 1:1 or 4:5) without stretching it; if its shape doesn't match, bars of the background colour appear. To avoid them, select the clip and press “Fill” in the Inspector: it enlarges the clip to cover the canvas, cropping whatever sticks out at the sides.
If you'd rather see the whole clip, press “Fit” and change the project's “Background” colour to one that matches. Clips can have different resolutions and frame rates: on export everything comes out at the resolution and fps you choose (24, 25, 30 or 60). If one clip is quieter than the rest, raise its “Volume” in the Inspector, up to 200%.
Transitions: what there is and what there isn't
Vaideo Editor has no transitions between clips (no wipes, zooms or transition effects). What it does have are per-clip fade-ins and fade-outs of up to 5 seconds, in the “Fades” or “Audio and fades” group in the Inspector: the picture fades in or out over the background colour and the sound rises or falls with it. A fade-out at the end of one clip and a fade-in at the start of the next gives a clean dip to black.
If you want a crossfade, you can fake it: put the second clip on a higher video layer (the add video layer button), overlap it by one second with the end of the first and give it a one-second “In” fade. For other transition effects you'll need a desktop editor. To see everything else you can do, there's an overview at /en/cases/free-video-editor/; and if you're short of footage, Vaideo's AI creates a video from a topic or an article and opens it in the editor so you can join it with your clips.
Ways to use it
Join the clips from a trip or an event
Import them all, add them in order with the + and trim each one's spare start and end before closing gaps.
Join several takes of a talking video
Put the good takes one after another, match the volume in the Inspector and export one MP4 for YouTube or LinkedIn.
Add an intro or outro to a video
Place your branded clip or image at the start or end and give it a half-second fade in or out.

In “Media”, drag all the files onto “Import files” and press the + on each one in the order they should play.

Export a single MP4
Press “Export”, choose resolution (up to 1080p free) and frame rate, and download the merged video with no watermark.
Tips that make the difference
- ★Pick the canvas before adding clips: it decides how each video fits and saves repositioning at the end.
- ★Rename files with a number in front (01, 02…) before uploading so they appear in order in “Media”.
- ★Trim the start and end of each clip before joining them; dead seconds really stand out between clips.
- ★Press “Close gaps” right before exporting: any gap, however small, exports as black.
- ★If your clips have different loudness, adjust them in the Inspector so the sound doesn't jump between them.
Merging with a typical tool vs Vaideo Editor
| Desktop app or sign-up web tool | Vaideo Editor | |
|---|---|---|
| Installation | Download and install software | None: it opens in your computer's browser |
| Watermark | Many free web tools stamp it on the merged video | No watermark on your footage, free plan included |
| Vertical and horizontal together | Sometimes stretches or distorts clips | Fits each clip without distortion; “Fill” removes the bars |
| Trimming before joining | On simple web tools, in a separate tool | On the same timeline |
| Transitions | Full desktop editors include plenty | Only per-clip fade-ins and fade-outs |
Frequently asked questions
How do I merge several videos into one for free?+
Import the videos into Vaideo Editor, add them to the same layer in order with the + button, press “Close gaps” and export. You get a single MP4 up to 1080p with no watermark on your footage.
Can I merge videos with different formats or sizes?+
Yes. Each clip fits into the canvas without distortion, whether it's vertical, horizontal or a different resolution. Use “Fill” to cover the canvas or “Fit” to see it whole with bars in the background colour.
Does it have transitions between clips?+
No. It has fade-ins and fade-outs of up to 5 seconds per clip, which work as a dip to black. A crossfade can be faked by overlapping the second clip on a higher layer with a fade-in.
Is there a limit on clips or length?+
Each file can be up to 2 GB. On the free plan you export up to 1080p, one video at a time; long videos simply take longer to export.
Can I add background music to the merged video?+
Yes, with your own audio file on an audio track. There's no built-in music library, so use music you own the rights to or that's royalty-free.
Does it work on mobile?+
No. Vaideo Editor runs in your computer's browser and needs a screen at least 900 pixels wide.
