Three ways to mute a video
The most direct: select the video clip and, in the Audio and fades section of the right-hand panel, tick Mute. Dragging the Volume slider to 0% gives the same result. If your video is made of several clips on the same track, it's quicker to click the speaker icon on the track header (Mute track): it silences all its clips at once.
Muting doesn't delete anything: the audio stays in your project and you can bring it back by unticking the box or clicking the speaker again. When you export, the MP4 comes out without that sound. What the editor doesn't do is separate a voice from music or noise inside the same audio: you mute or lower the clip's whole sound, not one part of the mix.
Removing the sound in just one part
To silence a swear word, a comment or a loud noise without losing the rest, put the playhead where it starts, press S to split, move to where it ends and press S again. That section is now its own clip: select it and tick Mute. The picture stays the same and the rest of the video keeps its sound.
If the cut sounds abrupt, instead of muting the section use the In and Out fades on the neighbouring clips (up to 5 seconds) so the volume dips and returns smoothly. The ← → arrow keys move the playhead frame by frame, and with Shift, second by second, to find the exact spot.
Putting other audio in its place
Once it's muted, you can replace the sound with whatever you want: upload a separately recorded voice-over or a song of yours with Import files and drop it on an audio track. Set its volume from 0 to 200% and its fades in the same Audio and fades section. Remember there's no music library: you bring the audio, and it must be yours or licensed.
If what you want is a new voice for the video, Vaideo's AI creates narrated videos with an AI voice in English or Spanish from a topic or an article, and “Open in the editor” brings them in as tracks to fine-tune. For the rest of the editor's features, see /en/cases/free-video-editor/.
Ideas to use it
A silent video to use as background
Mute the whole track and export: ideal for in-store screens, presentations or autoplaying website backgrounds.
Cover up a noise or a specific word
Split with S at the start and end of the section and mute just that piece; the rest of the audio stays the same.
Swap the original audio for a voice-over
Mute the video, upload your voice recording to an audio track and set it to 100-150% so it comes through clearly.
Step by step
- 1
Import your video
Open Vaideo Editor on your computer. In Media («Medios»), click Import files and drop the video on the timeline (free account to upload).
- 2
Select the clip or section
Click the clip. If you only want to mute part of it, split it first with S (or Ctrl+B) at the start and end.
- 3
Mute the audio
Under Audio and fades, tick Mute or set Volume to 0%. For every clip on a track, click the track's speaker icon.
- 4
Add other audio (optional)
Upload a song or voice-over of your own and place it on an audio track; set its volume and fades.
- 5
Export as MP4
Click Export and download the MP4 without the original sound. Up to 1080p free; 2K and 4K with Unlimited.
Tips that make the difference
- ★If your video is several clips, mute the track with its speaker icon instead of going clip by clip.
- ★To silence a section, fine-tune the cut with the ← → arrow keys: they step frame by frame.
- ★A 0.5-1 second fade before and after the muted section sounds more natural than a hard cut.
- ★Muting doesn't delete the audio: if you change your mind, untick Mute or press Ctrl+Z.
- ★Pick the same canvas as the original video (16:9, 9:16, 1:1 or 4:5) so the picture exports without black bars.
Removing audio: other tools vs Vaideo Editor
| Desktop app or single-purpose web tool | Vaideo Editor | |

| Add other audio | Needs another tool or a full editor | In the same editor, with volume and fades |
| Watermark | Common on free web tools | Your video exports clean, free plan included |
| Separate voice from music | Some AI tools do it | No: you mute or lower the clip's whole sound |
Frequently asked questions
How do I remove audio from a video for free?+
Upload the video to Vaideo Editor with a free account, select the clip, tick Mute and export. It comes out as an MP4 up to 1080p with no watermark.
Can I remove the sound from just part of the video?+
Yes. Split the clip with S at the start and end of the section and tick Mute on that piece only. The rest keeps its audio.
Can I remove the music and keep the voice?+
No. If the voice and music are in the same audio, the editor can't separate them: you mute or lower the clip's whole sound. You can only control them separately if they come as different files.
Do I lose picture quality when removing the audio?+
The video is re-encoded to MP4 (H.264). Export at the same resolution as the original and with High or Maximum quality so the difference isn't noticeable.
Can I get the sound back later?+
In the project, yes: muting doesn't delete the audio, so you untick Mute and export again. An MP4 you already exported stays without that sound.
Does it work on a phone?+
No. Vaideo Editor runs in your computer's browser, on a screen at least 900 pixels wide.
