In short

There's no single “best” free AI video generator: it depends on the kind of video. For narrated videos from a topic or an article (YouTube, Shorts, TikTok), Vaideo gives you 1 free video a day and Fliki a few minutes a month; for avatars talking to camera, HeyGen (3 videos a month) and Synthesia (10 minutes a month); for cutting long videos into clips, Opus Clip; and for editing your own clips, CapCut or Vaideo Editor. Almost every free plan adds a watermark; Pictory has no free plan, only a 14-day trial. Data from October 2026.

How we compared them

We checked each tool's official pricing page in October 2026 and focused on what matters when you're starting out: what you can do for free, how much of it, whether there's a watermark and what the first paid plan costs. Prices change often, so always check each site before paying.

We're Vaideo and of course we include our own tool, but we try to be fair: for many kinds of video there are better options than ours, and we say so. The first thing is to know what video you want to make, because “AI video tools” are really four different families.

Narrated videos from text: Vaideo, InVideo AI, Fliki and Pictory

You type a topic, a script or paste an article, and the tool generates the voice, images or clips and captions. It's the format behind faceless channels, list videos, fun facts and article summaries.

Vaideo gives you 1 free video a day (up to 30 s, 720p, watermarked), turns an article URL into a video and narrates in English and Spanish; removing the watermark costs from €5 for 5 videos, no subscription. InVideo AI works with stock footage and AI-generated clips and has a watermarked free plan; paid starts at €20/month. Fliki gives you a few free minutes a month in 720p with a watermark and stands out for its voice catalogue in 80+ languages. Pictory is very complete and uses Getty and Storyblocks clips, but has no free plan: only a 14-day trial, then from $29/month.

Avatars talking to camera: HeyGen and Synthesia

If you need a person on screen—training, product presentations, internal comms—you need an avatar generator. HeyGen gives you 3 free videos a month up to 1 minute each, in 1080p with a watermark, and its first plan costs $29/month. Synthesia gives you 10 free minutes a month with a watermark and 140+ languages; paid starts at $29/month ($18 billed yearly).

Vaideo doesn't make avatars. For social videos without a presenter, an avatar usually makes each minute more expensive without improving the result; for corporate training, it's exactly what you need.

Clipping long videos and editing your clips: Opus Clip, CapCut and Vaideo Editor

Opus Clip doesn't create videos from text: it takes a long video of yours (podcast, livestream, interview) and pulls out captioned vertical clips. Its free plan includes clips every month with a watermark and exports up to 1080p that expire after 3 days; paid starts at $15/month.

For editing your own clips, CapCut is the most complete free editor, with a mobile app, templates and effects; its AI features and premium assets are in Pro (from €23.99/month). Vaideo Editor is simpler, runs in your computer's browser, exports 1080p for free with no watermark on your footage and opens videos made by Vaideo's AI track by track.

Step by step

  1. 1

Decide what kind of video you want

Narrated from text, with an avatar, clipped from a long video or edited by hand. Each family has its own tools.

  2. 2

    Check the language

If you publish in Spanish or another non-English language, listen to the voice before deciding: quality varies a lot between tools.

  3. 3

Try the free plan with the same topic

Make the same video in two or three tools and compare the result, not the marketing.

  4. 4

See how to remove the watermark

Some require a monthly subscription; others, like Vaideo, offer one-off packs.

  5. 5

Work out the cost per video

Divide the plan price by the videos you'll publish each month: that's the number that really matters.

Tips that make the difference

  • ★Free plans are for testing, not for posting daily: almost all add a watermark or cap the resolution.
  • ★Be wary of “unlimited”: always read the fine print on fair use, credits and minutes.
  • ★Always check the facts in the script: any AI can get figures and dates wrong.
  • ★If you post on several platforms, make the video in 9:16: it works for Shorts, TikTok and Reels at once.
  • ★Combining tools is normal: one to generate, another to edit.
